The quest to find hoards of gold hidden by German officials and soldiers during and immediately after World War II is the stuff of legends, conspiracy theories and countless treasure hunts that continue to this day – primarily because it has been nearly 80 years and little if any has been verifiably found. While some was ‘laundered’ through financial institutions whose records have been destroyed, there is still much in the form of bars and jewelry still rumored to be buried, hidden or secretly stored in vaults – often guarded by powerful people who know its existence and are sworn to secrecy for a wide variety of nefarious reasons.
